NOTE FROM JANIE
My Mom, Pearl passed away on December 9, 2001 at 95 years of age and was a victim or dementia and Parkinson's disease for 14 years. This is our story and is also the story of thousands of baby boomers and their loved ones. I have lived this story from 1984 when Daddy began his struggle with Alzheimers disease, dying in 1987, and Mom's life from age 80 to 95, with her confusion and challenges. As an only child my journey was financially and emotionally rough but also an awakening to hold out my hands and heart to others.

SUMMARY OF VIDEO: Whether you are a caring family member concerned with aging parents or a professional working in Long Term Care, this video is dedicated to you.

As the life of Pearl Flanigan Felker unfolds we are transported from past to present and back again. We share the joys and fears of all humanity. We are moved to action! Janie says, "I was not prepared for the death of my father from Alzheimer's, followed by my mother's declining self-reliance.

There were few resources and little support from bankers, attorneys and other professionals who dealt with my parents' affairs. I would like you to learn from my own experience. My parents were wonderful, vital people and their lives were a treasure. Share my story and realize the value of being prepared.

"How Did You Get Started?"

He told me to hold the flag straight and stand tall on every Memorial Day, Fourth of July and many other days in between. His mother, Katie emigrated from Russia, his father, Henry was born in Germany. He was the oldest of ten and he was my Dad. He believed in the free enterprise system. He sang patriotic songs. He loved the freedom of speech and quoted from the Declaration of Independence.

Mom taught me how to dance the Irish jig, laugh often and pray. Her maiden name was Flanigan. Her grandfather came from Ireland and her grandmother came from England. These two parents of mine laid the foundation for my belief in success.

It never occurred to me that success wasn't possible. Risks, stepping out, speaking up, dancing and praying were a way of life. I had no doubt that talent, work, tenacity, love, listening, caring and prayer would deliver peace of mind, fun at achieving and food on the table.

"Giving," taught me that what went out of the front door returned though the back door multiplied one hundred fold.

I wasted this knowledge early on and made my own mistakes. An awakening was achieved through the twelve steps of AA. I was finally free at 36 years of age. Beginning then and practicing all I had been shown success took root.

The fruits of faith, family, work, friends and mentors paid off in my personal and professional well being.

Therapy, serenity and The National Speakers Association continue to show me answers daily. My talents as a child became strong skills as an adult. Character assets offset defects. Awareness of both helped me to listen to others.

Doors opened, people appeared to hire me, publish my little best selling book "The Littlest Christmas Tree," and success follows me daily to serve love as my goal.

Many people have influenced me. Dr Conrad Baars work on the Miracle of Affirmation, Mother Teresa's ministry to help people die with dignity and Jacque Cousteau for his drive to see the correlation between the land and the sea and the people and the animals.

My grandchildren and their innocence all show me life and possibilities.

If we are present to others our presence becomes a gift. It is through communicating with those who are affirming you with that gift that you will become all you were meant to be.

They will see your value, respond with eyes, body language and words that they value you in and of yourself without any desire to own you or control you. You will be seen in value and grow in that presence. It is this premise that my work and life are practiced.

Books that I love are:
  1. "The Miracle Of Affirmation" Conrad Baars
  2. "The Greatest Secret In The World" Og Mandino
  3. "The Littlest Christmas Tree" (a tale of growing and becoming) Janie Jasin
  4. "Heart In Hands" Janie Jasin
  5. "You've Got What It Takes" Janie Jasin
  6. Maya Angelou's Work
  7. "The Recovery Bible" Ways of 12 steps and scripture working together.
Because of having a successful speaking career I highly recommend audio learning. It is the easiest way to absorb help and information while on the move or simple relaxing. I have received mountains of help and ideas through this learning style.

Be blessed and know that your life's journey of success is possible. There is help and love all around you. Asking for help first and then receiving it is the magic formula. Then take action with a single step. The rest will follow. With sincere wishes for your success journey,
